I recently found out a neighbour of mine is in hospital. She’s getting a leg amputated because she has diabetes. This is a reminder to me about how awful and complicated diabetes is.
Did you know that two risk factors of adult type 2 diabetes are being overweight or obese, and eating an unhealthy diet? These are two things a person can change. Losing weight through a healthy diet and exercise can help prevent its onset.
We cannot predict the future. However, we can take steps to enhance the chances of it …
Ch 21: Laughter, Part 4: Here, Now and Onwards »
Playfulness and humour is one of my top signature strengths, so it’s probably not surprising I like to laugh. And sometimes when I laugh, I admit I am loud. I can’t help it. I feel it rise up inside me and I have to let it out. It feels great. It’s a great release and I highly recommend it. Laughter after all is good for you. It increases mood, releases muscle tension, helps relieve stress and may help you live longer. Well I’m not sure about that last one, however given the health risks of stress, it makes sense.
Ch 2: Health Benefits of Happiness, Part 1: The Essentials »
Last week I wrote an article on ways to save time that would also give your happiness a boost. Now I would like to add another suggestion: give up smoking.
I don’t smoke, so I don’t know for sure, but I do wonder how much time is wasted due to smoking. There’s the time spent actually smoking of course. Usually outside and alone, away from friends and family enjoying themselves. Then there’s the time spent thinking about smoking and wondering when you’ll get the chance to nip outside to have a quick drag. If there’s a delay to when you normally get a fix, then presumably your attention will be focused on your craving, rather than what you are currently doing.
Ch 17: Goals, Part 4: Here, Now and Onwards »

1 Limit television watching to one hour a day

Ch 2: Health Benefits of Happiness, Part 1: The Essentials, tips »
If you want a life of health and happiness, take care in who you choose as your role model. Celebrities and their lives are constantly in the media and it is easy to latch on to a particular celebrity’s lifestyle choice. Fad dieting and extreme regimes are not the way to good health and wellbeing however. I have yet to see research that says thin people are happiest. As such, seek out people who live healthy, balanced lifestyles. Of course, you may have to look further afield than Hollywood to …
Ch 24: Food, Part 4: Here, Now and Onwards »
A King’s College London study has reported that children with low self-esteem and low feelings of control are more likely to grow up to be obese.
Such research highlights that it is essential to look after mental wellbeing, to increase the chances of greater physical health later on in life. Because obesity brings with it many health risks, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Feeling good about yourself, believing you can control your destiny will not only boost your happiness, but probably your health also. Emotional eating is a huge problem, …
Ch 15: Living a Life of Passion, Part 4: Here, Now and Onwards »
So I had my first game of golf for the year on Sunday and I really enjoyed myself. As I sent balls in various directions (I never said I was good!), it occurred to me that playing golf is the perfect way to inject a little happiness. These are some of my realisations:
1) Golf can suit all personality types. Because you can play it on your own, or with a group of people, it can be suited to both introverts and extraverts. Introverts will value the opportunity for some quiet …
Ch 19: Kindness and Generosity, Part 4: Here, Now and Onwards »
If you pursue a life of happiness, there are many, many benefits to your overall mental health and wellbeing. There is however, one potential downfall. By exuding a happy disposition and not complaining about those small things that really don’t matter, people think your life is fine and dandy. It can be assumed that you are not affected by real life – somehow the struggles have bypassed you, just because you’ve managed to handle them in a healthy and productive way.
It seems sad to me that people don’t like to …
