Keeping your word
The other day a friend took his dog Phoebe to the vets to have a lump removed from her back. The lump was removed and sent away for testing and my friend was told they would phone him with the results. Except they didn’t phone. As a result, my friend was beside himself with worry, believing it was something awful that they didn’t like to tell him over the phone. A sleepless night followed. Fortunately he was taking Phoebe back the day after they had promised to phone. Turns out all was fine with Phoebe and nothing serious was found.
Why do people say they will do something and not follow through? If the vets had no intention of phoning, they shouldn’t say that they will. I am sure they are busy. But the point is they said they would call, and they didn’t. Sometimes it’s easy to make promises, believing nobody will notice or care if you break them. Yet if they had made the two minute phone call, my friend would have been saved a lot of stress and upset.
If you want the world around you to be happier, then you need to treat the world as appropriate. Just being mindful of the words you say can make a difference. If you don’t mean it, don’t say it.

oh my goodness, i thought there was only myself that bothered about such matters! its nice to know im not on my own!
i agree with you it drives me insane why indeed make a statement that is not going to be carried out?
Thanks Michelle. Interestingly, I seem to have been discussing this issue with a few people lately. In particular, I hear stories about people who are offered jobs, but the employer has no intention of actually formally giving the person an offer. I think people who are in charge of employment seem to forget this is people’s lives they are messing with. It’s always a great feeling to be offered work – no more interviews, tweaking CVs, finally having work or a better job. You tell your friends and family, only to be later knocked back. Harsh. Of course, the trick is to bounce back the next morning and start afresh!
